Physical Therapists

Karen J. Woodbeck MS, PT, ATC, CKTI

Karen was a certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist Physical Therapist for 20 years and practicing Physical Therapist/Athletic Trainer and has over 29 years of experience, with a primary focus on orthopedics, sports medicine, manual therapy, pilates, taping, and cold laser. A philosophy she follows is “Never Give Up!” originally coined by Winston Churchill and embodied by the late Fr. Jim Mifsud S.M. who was a mentor. Karen loves working with clients motivated to improve and is tenacious in her pursuit of achieving their success.

Karen physical therapy philosophy emphasizes restoring good position and mobility, building stability, and immediately increasing function while reducing pain. Teaching the body how to do this using neuromuscular (brain-body) education is a strong part of client treatment.

In order to achieve the client’s goals, Karen utilizes a variety of skills obtained from years of practice incorporating extensive continuing education. Study includes courses with many internationally renowned instructors in the areas of Muscle Energy Technique, Mulligan’s Mobilization with Movement, myofascial release, McConnell technique, Primal reflex release technique, craniosacral therapy, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, and Kinesio Taping, to name a few.

Karen enjoys problem solving and finding Kinesio Taping applications that give clients tools to reduce pain and improve function as a part of their home program. She often teaches clients and their helpers how to tape, facilitating follow through during daily and sports activities to maximize results.

Karen has been a Kinesio Taping Association International Instructor since 2003. She has been privileged to teach domestically and internationally in courses and conferences from Ireland to Italy, France and Northern Ireland, Pennsylvania and Virginia to Louisiana and concentrating West in California. Karen has been honored to present at APTA’s Combined Sections Meeting and the NATA National Convention. Body Dynamic hosts several classes every year locally in San Jose.

One standout highlight was working at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia for the Softball venue. In addition to athletics, Karen volunteers for her local homeowners board and Cursillo.

Karen grew up locally in Silicon Valley and was a participant in several sports during her time at Cupertino High School. After high school Karen was an exchange student to Denmark. She spent a year abroad learning Danish, going to school, and living with a family in a small town in southwestern Jutland. She still keeps in touch with her family there and a few friends although her Danish is quite rusty.

In college, Karen continued to participate in sports and was a Division 1 athlete in Track and Field. It was an injury in college and going through physical therapy that sparked her interest and lead Karen on her current career path.

In her free time, Karen remains very active and enjoys all things outdoors; especially organic gardening, grass doubles volleyball, hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, and traveling.
